  1. 1. I tend to concentrate fairly well on things that I’m interested in. When I’m studying a subject I’m really interested in, I concentrate much better than when studying something I find boring. If I’ve been sitting still for a long time, I don’t concentrate as well on a movie – that’s why I usually get up and walk around for a bit before watching one. Sometimes I pause midway to take a break. During class my concentration is okay, but it’s usually better at the beginning of class. I focus pretty well when my friends are talking (as long as they aren’t all talking at once).
    2. Some days I study better when it’s quiet, and some days I prefer music or some sort of background noise. If I’m tired or disinterested it’s much harder to stay focused. One thing I try to do is take breaks to help settle my brain and get back on task.
    3. SQ3R is a method used to better understand reading material. It is comprised of scanning to get an idea of what you’ll be reading, forming questions to help you concentrate on the material, answering the questions, taking notes, and reviewing later. Sometimes when reading an assignment, I scan through before reading and then take notes while I read. I think it would be helpful for longer materials (and for boring ones) but it’s rather time-consuming, so it might not work for every single assignment. For shorter material, you could just do the skim, read, notes, and recite.
    4. I think it’s important to find out what type of study area works best for you and create that environment so that you can concentrate easily.

We both concentrate fairly well on things that interest us. In addition, I think that pausing a session halfway for a break is a great idea. It gives the student time to take in all the information, so the student can be ready to learn the upcoming topic. Moreover, the break can give the student time to use the restroom or use their phones rather than doing so in class. If the student were given a certain amount of time to do these things then the student can actually put more attention in the class rather than focusing on the class and focusing on their phones simultaneously.

  3. 1. How well do you concentrate in general? How about while studying? How about during movies? How about during class? How about when your friends talk?
I concentrate pretty well in general. I do not concentrate very well when studying because I have no desire to so there for I get distracted easily. I can concentrate only if the movie is interesting. During class most of the time I zone out and don’t concentrate unless the topic is interesting. I concentrate when my friends talk because I want to be able to understand what they are saying.

    2. Based on how you answered the above questions what do you think affects how well you concentrate? How could use this awareness to help you concentrating when studying?
Based on how I answered the questions I believe that the topic has to be interesting to me or I absolutely have to concentrate to be able to understand something. I can try and make studying more important in my life and more interesting.

    3. Explain in your own words what this method is and would you use it? Do you think it might be helpful with your reading assignments? Why or why not?
    SQR3:
    survey, question, read, recite, review
This method is used to help people read and understand a reading assignment. I think I would use it if I remembered to because I believe it would be helpful since it is a effective technique.

A tip I might use is using incentives to help me concentrate better in class and with studying.

    1. I definitely agree that it’s harder to focus during school when the topic is boring. It really helps me when teachers make jokes or try to make the topic more interesting. Do you think it would be easier to pay attention if you were given a break partway through class? I know that would help me a lot, and I’ve heard other people say the same.

My concentration level is moderate. When studying I have a high concentration. I have the mindset that if I don’t study well then my assignment will be poorly. During movies I really don’t pay any attention at all unless it’s a movie that I am highly interested in. I don’t like going to the movie theater because I don’t want to pay $10.00 to see a movie I didn’t even pay attention to. While I am in class my concentration tends to follow on how well the teacher is concentrated. If the teacher goes off subject I usually go to La-La land for the rest of that class. When speaking to my friends I give them all my attention. The only thing that can stop me from listening to them is if someone interrupts the conversation.
I tend to study with music played loudly. Some people say that’s not a good way to study but it really helps me. Having the music turned up makes me put up a defense to block it out which helps I stay focus. If the room is quite then I allow myself to drift off and think about something else. So when I am taking a test I will perform well. If there was a student to start talking then I would block them right out. The way I study really shows how I will perform during the main assignment.
The SQR3 method is basically analyzing you text before and while you’re reading. Making you answer little questions and notes. SQR3 method wouldn’t be a method for me to use. Doing all of that analyzing would distract me from really reading what the text is trying to tell and teach me. Analyzing everything will also confuse me to a certain point too. I will analyze one thing but feel like it’s another thing that the text is trying to say. That method may help others but its one method I would never use. Only time I would use that method is if it was required to.
One thing I will remember is to know my style of studying and concentration. The best way is your way because everybody has different ways of doing something. If your way may be wrong reevaluate the end product (test, classwork, paper etc.). Look at what you did wrong and go back and see what contributed to that. After evaluating what you did then go deeper into thinking where you were at , what you were doing, and how you were doing the assignment. Once all of analyzing is do then put the gathered information to work to help you do better.

    1. Well for me it is very hard for me to concentrate. It takes me a while for me to focus totally on want I am doing. In order for me to concentrate I have to have no distraction around me. The room where I am studying or doing work has to be totally silent. If not it is very hard for to me to concentrate with noise. Therefore if there is a movie on that movie has to shut down or something because I will focus more on the movie then on my school work. Also if I have friends around me they have to be doing work or something because if they are just talking I rather walk away and go to a more silent place where I cam concentrate.
    2. What affects me is noise I cannot concentrate with noise no matter what. Therefore when I have noise around me I just walk away and find another place that I know I will concentrate. It affects me a lot when I do not concentrate because I am a person that studies a lot and if I do not have that time to study and concentrate it really bothers me and affects also my grades.
    3. SQ3R is a very good method, and it is a method I have been using lately. I personally think it is really help. Therefore when I ever I take a quiz I never get a grade below 85 which makes me really happy. Therefore this method is like annotating what you read, and then looking over your annotations and asking yourself questions, or asking the teacher questions. This is really smart because you can always go over what you had questions on.
    4. I think I would love to do the one of “Stick to a routine, efficient schedule and study”. Because I think if you have a specific time to study that time will only be focus on studying nothing else. Another one I like is that never leave the hard work at last always maintain your energy level to the most difficult assignments. It’s better that way because at last you can do the most easy or interesting things that you enjoy doing.

    1. I really like your idea to annotate the notes you take. That sounds like a very good way to remember the most important details and things that you might’ve had questions about. It would be especially useful when studying for cumulative tests (so that you only review what you need to know and not lots of unimportant details). I also like your idea to pick a time for studying and using the same time every day; it seems like a great way to get into the habit of studying regularly.

I see that your studies habitats are very much different from the habitats I do. You like a quiet room to study in, and I understand that. However, when the room is too quiet, I feel distracted by the quietness for some strange reason. I always like some sort of sound in the room, such as music. Moreover, I think that you take good responsibility to your work efforts by leaving a noisy room to another peaceful room to study and focus on your school work.

    3. Intresting, when I'm in a quiet room every little thing distracts me, no matter what it is, from the sound to someone elce writing to another person coming in the room, and I can understand you dont think of how you can hear everything better but being in a quiet room just doesn't work for me

    5. I think the "Stick with a routine" is a good method but it seems like it would get boring at some point. When i have to study i try diffrent styles to see which one sticks.

Well Donshanae I think me and you have very different study habits. Therefore I disagree with you that playing music helps to concentrate. “Yes” it might help you, but I believe when you’re playing music you tend to focus more on your iPod or whatever then on your work. Because when I have an iPod and I am doing work I attend to pay more attention on my iPod then music because I be changing the song every time 30 seconds. Yet we all have our own way to study therefore that might be the best way you can concentrate. On the other hand I rather complete silence.

    1. I think I can concentrate very well depending on the situation. For instance, I lack concentration on things that are more boring than those that are more entertaining, such as studying and taking tests. When it comes to studying, I easily tend to let my mind wander off about other things. However, I can concentrate better on things that are more amusing to me, such as watching a movie. Watching a movie doesn’t take much focus but watching and enjoying a video, so I think it’s easier to concentrate when I’m enjoying the activity. And when a friend talks, I stay focus depending on what they are talking about. Sometimes my mind would usually wander because I have something else in mind but typically I’m pretty much focused on what their talking about because that’s the appropriate thing to do.
    2. I think things that affects concentration depends on what is around you and how interested you are in the topic. When I’m studying, I try to find a room where it isn’t too silent or too loud. I best focus in rooms where there is a little noise to comfort me, and sometimes I listen to music to help relax over the workload.
    3. Basically the SQR3 is a helpful technique to help a reader take in the reading more efficiently. It is an ongoing process where you have to do a certain thing each day until the assignment is fully understood. In addition, I think I can try this method on things that I don’t comprehend, such as more difficult classes I have trouble in. For instance, I can use this method for my psychology class because the professor gives us a reading assignment every week, so this method is perfect for it. Each day I can do something different that would help me understand the topic for that week until I finish and understand everything. But I would not do this to every assignment because it is only necessary for assignments that are difficult to comprehend.
    4. One tip from this article I would give is to take in information slowly. Don’t ever cram everything in one sitting because the brain would not understand everything but some parts. It is wise to read some parts now and some later on because it would keep you more concentrated, and you will more likely to know the topic better.

  9. 1. I concentrate pretty well... if it is interesting enough. If something is completely and utterly boring, everybody can get distracted easily. I think overall,I study better when listening to music. When there is SOME form of enjoyment in studying, it makes me more motivated to do it. Things have to be interesting/enjoyable for me to feel the need to concentrate.
    2. Like I said, music helps me concentrate. Listening to my ipod helps me focus and keeps me from being distracted. Music definetly helps me concentrate.
    3. The Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review method is effective because it helps the reader understand what they will be reading about before they read it.I personally don't think this method would be effective for me. I understand what I'm reading without observing beforehand. I would not use this, only because it wouldn't really make a difference.
    4. I want to try the "Be here now" trick. That looks pretty interesting. I think that would actually make a difference, knowing me.

    1. I'm definitely the same about having to focus on things that I think are boring.
I wish I were able to listen to music while studying, though. I always end up only focusing on the words of the song instead of the words on the paper. I usually can't even focus on people that are talking directly to me when I'm listening to music, unless it's so quiet that I can barely hear it.

  10. 1. In general it is very difficult for me to foucus on one thing unless I have and intrest in it, there are times when I do want to study and during those times I can focous on studieing, I find it best to let myself get distracted because I still remember that I have to do the work and once I stop thinking of whatever distracted me I get back to work, I tried to shedual a time when I would let myself think of something other than work, but that didn't work out too well and I cept getting distracted while it was time to work and I cept thinking about work when I was on break, I also tried working for longer periods of time while shaking off distractions, that didn't work either
    2. a little noise pollution always helps because it's something that can distract me but doesn't
    3. I don't quite like the SQR3 reading method because I have already do half of it, such as reading all the titles and chapter into before reading the text, I also do raise questions without thinking about what the question is already, if I don't understand something I always go back and reread the sentence or paragraph, it all just seems like common scence
    4. I would advise maximum use of times when you do or don't have energy, for example I study psycology in the morning because I'm tired and like the subject, I study spanish in the afternoon because I'm more awake and it's a hard subject

    1. I wish I could just let myself get distracted and still remember to return to my work. Usually if I get off task, I'll end up doing something else after that, and then keep doing things until suddenly it's late and I still have a lot of things to do.
I do like your suggestion for staying focused, though. Trying to balance out my interest vs focus is probably a good way of doing things efficiently.

  11. 1. I'm not usually the best concentrator. When I study I usually stop a lot, or else studying is more like just staring at the information without really registering anything. I'm usually pretty focused on movies, but sometimes the movie will get me to think about something, and then for a while I'll be thinking about that instead of paying attention to the movie. I'm usually pretty focused if the teacher is talking and I'm taking notes, but if I start getting behind while writing, I'll end up stopping the notes and just listening. I usually am pretty focused when I'm listening to my friends, unless more than one person is trying to talk at once.

    2. The biggest thing that controls my concentration is just my interest. If I'm just not interested, I think about too many other things that are more interesting than whatever I'm doing.

    3. The SQR3 method basically suggests that before you start studying, just look over what it is that you'll be studying. Get an idea of what you're about to be taking in, and try to think about if you've learned any of it in the past. It wants you to really be thinking about what you're learning, so that you can remember it better, and then to make sure that you actually absorbed it by trying to tell yourself what you just read after you're done, and then checking over it later. It might be a good way for me to study if I'm really having a hard time with the subject, if I'm able to actually bring myself to sit down and try to focus on the whole thing.

    4. I do think that trying to take the information in slower is a good idea, because if I study information bit by bit, it won't be as overwhelming and I won't want to just stop studying completely as much.

  12. 1. When it’s something I’m interested in, I tend to concentrate very well, but if it’s something I don’t really care for then I lose focus very fast. I can almost never concentrate when I’m studying because it seems like everything else catches my eye. At the movies I seem to concentrate a lot because I be in-to the movie most likely if it’s a good movie. Most of the time when my friends are talking I am thinking about something else and not really listening unless it’s something I care to hear.
    2. I think whether I’m interested or not affects how well I concentrate on something particular. I think it also depends how quiet my environment is when I’m studying. If its loud I think I will be more focus on everything else around me whether then if it was louder.
    3. SQR3 is a helpful way to comprehend and understand a book, if you are having trouble with it. I already use this method in a way when im reading and it really helps me understand what im reading more and I personally think it cant help anyone out.
    4. I think I might try to make whatever im studying more entertaining instead of looking so negative on everything because that just makes everything worse.

  13. 1. How well do you concentrate in general? How about while studying? How about during movies? How about during class? How about when your friends talk?
*My concentration varys depending on the environment i am in and depending on my mood. In general i would say my concentration is faily well. When i am studying i can concentrate but i cant really stay focused for hours on one subject so when i study i bounce back and forth with subjects. During movies i can concentrate good unless ive seen it before or its just boring. During class i pay attention for the most part but towards the end all i think about is how im ready for it to be over. When i talk to my friends i concentrate completely unless i really dont care for what they are talking about.

    2. Based on how you answered the above questions what do you think affects how well you concentrate? How could use this awareness to help you concentrating when studying?
*Based on the previous questions answers my interest and mood affects how well i concentrate. I can use my awareness by making it interesting or have a different attitude when it comes to studying.

    3. As college students, you are assigned lengthy reading assignments that are sometimes difficult to concentrate and focus on. The article mentions SQR3 reading method. Click on the SQR3 link and read. Explain in your own words what this method is and would you use it? Do you think it might be helpful with your reading assignments? Why or why not?
*The method of SQ3R is simple and to some can be helpful. The S stands for survey. You can survey by reviewing question or reading a summary. The Q stands for question. You can do this by turning the title, headings, and/or subheadings into questions. The 3 R’s stand for read, recite and review. All three of these things are action you have to do in order to comprehend whatever you read. I think the 3 R's will help with my reading assignments because thats a requirement in order to understand.

    4. Based on this article tell us one tip or advice you think you might follow that you read about.
*I think the focus tip is the one i will use. It says Before you begin studying, take a few minutes to summarize a few objectives, gather what you will need, and think of a general strategy of accomplishment. This is definitly a method that can help out when i have to study.
